Meraxis expands regranulate portfolio for film applications

Muri b. Bern/Switzerland, March 27, 2020 – The global polymer-trading group Meraxis has expanded its recycling division to include regranulates from post-industrial sources (PIR) and post-consumer sources (PCI). The products are used for film applications in the packaging industry, for sacks and bags, and for construction and agricultural films, among other things.

"With our PIR- and PCR-based regranulate solutions, we offer first-class recycling alternatives for films,” points out Elmar Schröter, Executive Director Recycling Materials, Compounds & New Business Development. The demand for recyclates for film applications is on the rise, especially in the packaging industry. “Here, we sense great interest in premium qualities for use in non-food applications.”

Since its foundation last year, Meraxis has been working closely with numerous recyclers. As Meraxis is continuing to expand its network, the range of regranulates and recompounds in different quality grades is also growing. The polymer distributor now supplies its customers with recyclates for applications such as injection molding (e.g., transport boxes, cases, or pens), pipes, pallets, cartridges, packaging tapes, or bottles (PET). “In the past, our recycling product range mainly included polyolefins from post-industrial sources,” explains Philipp Endres, Deputy CEO at Meraxis. “Adding PCR-recyclates to our portfolio allows us to offer our customers another alternative to our prime polymers.” Suppliers and their recycling products are subject to strict quality checks and – as with prime products – are supplied with the customary certificates of analysis. "This is how we ensure that these products are delivered in a defined, consistent quality," says Mr. Endres.

Even in times of Covid-19, the establishment of a functioning circular economy remains one of the core challenges of the polymer industry. “The market requires sustainable solutions,” explains Schröter. “It's not just legislators who are pushing for recyclate quotas; the industry is also working all out on a functioning circular economy.” Meraxis’ one-stop shop will enable polymer processors to access a comprehensive portfolio of polymers and compounds for both prime and recyclate materials. At the same time, recyclers gain access to a global market. “Our goal is and will remain to find cost-efficient solutions for the individual requirements of our customers so that more high-quality recyclates find their way into industrial production in the future.”
